Former CIA officer James Woolsey said President-elect Donald Trump is not likely to be a “smart enough leader” to handle his responsibilities.
Woolsey, who served as a top CIA officer under former President George W. Bush, said Trump’s pick for CIA director, retired Lt.
Gen. Michael Flynn, is not someone who would be able “to handle the kind of transition” he will be required to do, according to a report by Politico.
The article reported that Flynn has had a rocky relationship with some in the intelligence community, with some calling him a “liar” and a “fraud” and others questioning his patriotism.
“If he was a member of Congress or the Senate, I would expect him to be honest and transparent,” Woolsey told Politico.
“But I don’t think he is.”
The article also reported that Woolsey has said that Flynn is a “loser” for working with Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Flynn has also been accused of lying to Congress about his conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
“It was a lot of lying, lying, to get to a conclusion, which I don and frankly, I didn’t see that that was an honest, competent way to conduct business,” Woolsell told Politico in a phone interview.
“I think that it was a big mistake for him to come to Congress to make the claim that there were no contacts between Russia and the Trump campaign.”
Woolsey added that he would have been more comfortable working with a Republican if he were Trump.
“There are going to have to be some disagreements, but I would have probably been more willing to work with a Democrat,” he said.
“Because there is no Republican leader who would have done this.”
Woolsell, who also served as the deputy national security adviser under President George H.W. Bush and is now an adjunct professor at the U.S. Naval War College, said that he believes Trump is “the worst president in history,” but said he will “have to live with it.”
“You will see him struggle, but there will be no change in the way he runs the country,” Woolson said.
The former CIA officer added that while he believes the President-Elect is not a “great leader” in his own right, he will work with him “to try to figure out how to run the country.”
Woolson told Politico that he “wanted to see [Trump] succeed” and added that “I really do think he will succeed.”
Woolsy said that Trump is a good person, but “he is not the best candidate” to be commander-in-chief.
“He is a smart enough leader to take charge of this country, but he is not smart enough to manage a transition,” Woolsy told Politico, adding that “the kind of leadership that he’s going to need will be someone who’s going get along with the other people in the transition, but not someone that is so close to the President.”
